I find it has the most similar consistency to regular dairy milk, which is great, especially if you love non-dairy milk in your coffee. I often find other non-dairy milk options like almond milk or soy milk to be too watery and they do not froth as well as oat milk.

Making oat milk from scratch is super easy! All you need are a few simple ingredients, a blender, fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, and an airtight container. In less than five minutes you can have creamy, rich oat milk to use in your coffee, pour in your cereal, or add to your smoothies!

What Ingredients are needed to make Oat Milk?

  • Rolled Oats: Make sure they are organic, gluten-free oats to ensure there is no wheat and unnecessary additives (like pesky glyphosate– an herbicide). These are my favorite gluten-free oats. Do not use steel-cut or quick oats because this will result in slimy oat milk.
  • Water: Use ice-cold water for the best results. This helps prevent the oats from activating and softening (turning more into oatmeal), which can lead to slimy oat milk.
  • Dates: The Medjool dates are used to sweeten the oat milk. You can use one or two, just make sure to remove the pit first. You can also use Maple Syrup or Agave Syrup instead if you do not have dates at home (1-2 tbsp).

If the oat milk is made with certified gluten-free oats, then yes, it is gluten-free! Make sure to use oats that are gluten-free, like Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Organic Old Fashioned Rolled Oats or Trader Joes Gluten Free and Wheat Free Rolled Oats

  1. BLEND. Combine all of the ingredients in a high-powered blender on high speed and blend for about 30-60 seconds. Do not overblend.
  2. STRAIN. Using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, strain the mixture over a large bowl to remove any small clumps and bits of oats. Strain twice and discard the pulp each time. Do not squeeze the pulp. **It is important to strain the mixture twice to make sure the oat milk is a creamy texture and smooth as possible.
  3. POUR. Transfer the oat milk into an airtight mason jar and store in the fridge. You can use the oat milk immediately or chill it first before using.

  • Use Dry Rolled Oats. Do not soak the oats before blending.
  • Do not over blend! Blend the oats for 30-60 seconds. The water should look creamy and white after blending.
  • Use Ice Cold Water. This prevents the oats from activating and expanding (turning into oatmeal).
  • Strain Twice. Use a cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer. Discard the leftover pulp each time.
  • Do not press the pulp to get more liquid. This will most definitely make the oat milk slimy.

  2. Hi and thank you for sharing the recipe! I just made the oat milk at home with my Vitamix and it’s a bit… slimey? Like a slurry. The first time was worse, I think I blended it over two minutes. I tried to strain it several times with both a tea strainer and cheese cloth. The fastest method was definitely cheese cloth doubled over once, over a large size bowl, it went slower trying the cheese cloth into a big mason jar. I made it again and added three dates and 2 T maple syrup. Blended it for a minute and 30 seconds. The consistency and taste was better! I probably have a sweet tooth?! Haha But honestly I want to make this on a regular basis if I can get it to not be slimey… any additional tips? Thanks in advance!!

I’ve been making homemade oat milk regularly since writing this post and now have updated the post with lots of tips. 🙂 A few things that I’ve found helpful when making the oat milk are: not to blend the oats too long– 30 to 60 seconds is just right, use super ice-cold water, and definitely strain twice. If your dates are hard before blending, you can soak the dates in warm water for 10 minutes before blending.
