This Watermelon Chocolate Smoothie is a refreshingly delicious 5-ingredient smoothie that’s hydrating, healthy, and perfect for the summer! This cool beverage is made with nutrient-rich cacao, fresh watermelon, herbaceous basil, and sweet dates.
Because of my love for watermelon, I enjoy finding new ways to incorporate it into my daily diet. Watermelon is AMAZING juiced or blended into a smoothie. This time I decided to add watermelon as a featured drink in my Smoothie Series.
It looks like simple chocolate milk at first glance. But at first sip, your taste buds are taken over by the sweet taste of watermelon followed by the subtle peppery taste of the basil, and all of these flavors are wrapped in velvety chocolate!
When I served this, the general feedback was:

What’s the difference between cocoa and cacao?
The chocolatey flavor comes from nutrient-rich cacao powder, not to be mistaken with cocoa powder, which is highly processed and less nutritious. Cacao is rich in antioxidants, iron, and magnesium. It is also high in amino acids that naturally enhance relaxation and boost mood.
In addition to cacao, this smoothie contains fresh basil and sweet dates, making this drink an invigorating delight.
Do chocolate and watermelon go together?
Something that many people do not know, is that watermelon pairs PERFECTLY with CHOCOLATE! I mean perfect, as in mouthwatering addictively, can’t-get-enough-of-it good.
Adding cacao is a fun, unexpected way to enjoy this classic summer fruit. This Watermelon Chocolate Smoothie is somewhat of an aperitif, sans the alcohol. The chocolate watermelon duo feels rich and decadent without weighing you down. It’s actually refreshing, dynamic, light, and perfect to sip on.

Watermelon Chocolate Smoothie
- 1/4 of a medium-sized Watermelon (~3 cups watermelon cut into cubes)
- 3 tbsp Fresh Basil
- 2 tbsp Cacao Powder
- 2 Dates (pitted)
- 1 cup Almond Milk (or other non-dairy milk)
- Combine all the ingredients into a high-powered blender and blend until smooth.
- If your smoothie is thicker than you’d like, add more almond milk. If you would like your smoothie thicker, add ice, until you reach your desired consistency.
