I must confess that I am a Watermelon Fanatic. No, literally, I am OBSESSED with all things watermelon. As soon as the summer hits and watermelon becomes available at the farmers market, I am first in line to grab a few.
I love everything about watermelon! It is:
Full of amino acids
Full of antioxidants
Provides tons of electrolytes
AND IS SOOOOO TASTY!
Because of my deep resounding love for watermelon, I enjoy finding new ways to incorporate watermelon into my daily diet. Of course, you can simply slice up some watermelon and have it as a snack– don’t forget to top it with lime because it is absolutely the best! But, I like to get creative with how I use watermelon. My watermelon mint salad is one of my favorites and it is always a hit whenever I bring it to parties.
This time I decided to add watermelon to as a featured drink in my Smoothie Series. First, watermelon is AMAZING when it is juiced or blended into a smoothie. Second, something that many people do not know, is that watermelon pairs PERFECTLY with CHOCOLATE! I mean perfect, as in mouthwatering addictively, can’t-get-enough-of-it good.
This Watermelon Chocolate Smoothie is somewhat of an aperitif, sans the alcohol. It’s refreshing, dynamic, light, and perfect to sip on before brunch.
The chocolatey flavor comes from nutrient-rich cacao powder, not to be mistaken with cocoa powder, which is highly processed and less nutritious. Cacao is rich in antioxidants, iron, magnesium. It is also high in amino acids that naturally enhance relaxation and boost mood. In addition to cacao, there is herbaceous basil and sweet dates added, making this drink is an invigorating delight.
My boyfriend’s birthday passed recently and to celebrate we had a few friends over for brunch. I made my Cajun Shrimp and Creamy Polenta and a Mushroom and Bacon Frittata. Once everyone was stuffed beyond belief and blissfully satisfied, I brought out glasses of this Watermelon Chocolate Smoothie to help wash everything down. I cannot begin to describe everyone’s reaction once they tasted the smoothie.
It looks like simple chocolate milk at first glance, but at first sip, your taste buds are taken over by the sweet taste of watermelon followed by the subtle peppery taste of the basil, and all of these flavors are wrapped in velvety chocolate!
The general feedback was, “This is amazing!” “I cannot believe I can distinctly taste each ingredient but they all blend together so well at the same time!”, and “This is so refreshing!”.
So, grab yourself a watermelon and add this Watermelon Chocolate Smoothie to your brunch this weekend. I know I will! 🙂
