Ingredients You’ll Need
- Sweet Potatoes: Try to find large, long potatoes so you can cut them into the perfect fry shape. You do not have to peel the potatoes when making fries, but you can if you like.
- Spices: Season the fries generously for the best results. I use a blend of sea salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika.
- Cooking Oil: Use neutral-flavored oil with a high smoking point, like avocado oil. In a pinch, olive oil would also work.
How do you cut sweet potatoes into fries?
The trick to making the best sweet potato fries is all in how you cut the sweet potato. Here’s my method:
- Step 1: First, cut the sweet potato lengthwise into thirds. (A convenient culinary trick to cutting round vegetables is to make a thin slice on one side and then use this side as a flat base.)
- Step 2: Then, take each of the thirds and slice them lengthwise into ¼ inch -½ inch thick slices. Depending on the size of your sweet potato this should yield 3-5 fry-like pieces
How To Make Sweet Potato Fries In The Air Fryer
- Preheat the air fryer to 400°F.
- Cut the potatoes lengthwise into thirds. Then, slice each potato into even ¼-inch thick fries.
- Transfer the fries into a large bowl. Add the spices and oil, and mix until all the fries are evenly coated.
- Add the sweet potatoes to the air fryer basket. Air fry for 15 minutes, turning halfway through. Cook the fries in batches in order to avoid overcrowding the air fryer.
- Serve with your favorite dipping sauce and sides. Enjoy!
TIPS TO NAIL THE RECIPE:
- Cut the sweet potato into evenly sized fries in order to prevent some from burning and some from being undercooked.
- Season the fries well. The mixture of spices is what takes these crispy sweet potato fries to a whole new level!
- Do not overcrowd the air fryer; this results in soggy fries. Make sure the fries are placed in an even single layer.
- Toss the fries halfway through so that all sides are crispy and golden brown.

Storage and Reheating
Store leftover sweet potato fries in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F for 2-3 minutes, or until warm.
How long does it take to cook sweet potato fries in the air fryer?
Sweet potato fries take about 15 minutes to cook in the air fryer, which is about a third of the time it takes to cook them in the oven.
Why are my air fryer sweet potato fries soggy?
If you overcrowd the air fryer, the heat won’t evenly penetrate the food so you could end up with soggy fries. It’s also possible that you used too much oil.
Is it necessary to soak sweet potatoes before air frying?
Not at all. Sweet potatoes do not contain as much starch as white potatoes. Soaking sweet potatoes in cold water is an optional step.
