Healthy Chocolate Avocado Bread | Gluten Free and Vegan

So since quarantine started, everyone has been obsessed with making Banana Bread—it was the highest searched recipe at the start of the quarantine with over 2 million searches in one week!

Well, I like to explore the unbeaten path so I decided to deviate from the crowd and make Gluten-free Double Chocolate Avocado Bread! Plus, I am obsessed with chocolate AND avocados, so why not pair the two together!?

It may seem abnormal to bake with avocados or any other fruit/vegetable, but incorporating healthy veggies and fruits into your favorite desserts is a great way to enjoy your favorite treats all while having a serving of healthy nutrients! The best part is that you can almost always never tell that anything was added!

You can hardly detect the avocado in this recipe, it only tastes like chocolatey goodness!

I love adding avocado to whatever I can, whether its bread, cakes, cookies, or pancakes! Yes, avocado is great in pancakes and gives it a fun green color! Just try these Avocado Blueberry Pancakes if you’re curious!

avocado mixture for making healthy bread

Making this gluten-free healthy avocado bread with its double dose of chocolate is super easy!

All you need is a little time and patience! You can mix the ingredients together in less than 10 minutes, but you will have to be patient as it bakes! This fudgy chocolate avocado loaf takes about an hour in the oven. So this is the perfect bread to make when you’re just relaxing in your home and can bask in the aromas of decadent, rich chocolate while completing your normal, everyday tasks!

What you will need to make Gluten-Free Chocolate Avocado Bread:

To make the Avocado Mixture you will need:

Avocado: I used one and a half avocados for this recipe, which gave me about 1 ¾ cups. My avocados were medium-sized. If your avocado is small, use two. I recommend using Hass avocados as they are more creamy and buttery, which is perfect for this recipe.

Applesauce: applesauce is a great egg replacement in vegan baking. It helps to bind the ingredients together and also helps to keep the finished product perfectly moist.

Coconut oil: Make sure to melt the coconut oil before adding it to the other ingredients. My favorite coconut oil is linked here.

Vanilla Extract: Vanilla is always essential when making baked goods. It helps enhance all the flavors used and provides a warm, savory taste.

Coconut Cream: Be sure to use coconut cream and not coconut milk. Coconut Cream is the thick part at the top of the can. You can make your own coconut cream by simply placing a can of Full Fat Coconut Milk, like this one, in the fridge overnight. The cream will solidify at the top and be ready for you to use. I always leave a can of full-fat coconut milk in the fridge so I always have coconut cream handy when I need to use it.

Maple syrup: This recipe is refined sugar-free, which means it’s perfectly sweetened with natural sweeteners like Maple Syrup. Here is one of my favorite brands to use!

Almond milk: You may need to add almond milk (or any other non-dairy milk) if the mixture is too dry when making the batter. I found that adding ¼ cup of almond milk gave me the perfect consistency.

For the dry ingredients you will need:

Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour: I use Bob’s Red Gluten-Free 1:1 Baking Flour. If you are not gluten intolerant, you can use regular flour, like this one

Almond Flour: I love using almond flour, especially in this recipe. It helps make the bread fluffy and helps to retain any excess moisture in the batter.

Cocoa Powder: You can use Dutch Processed Cocoa Powder, like this one. Or you can use Raw Cacao powder for an even healthier alternative. Keep in mind that Raw Cacao Powder is slightly more bitter than Dutch Processed Cocoa Powder.

Coconut Sugar: I just LOVE using coconut sugar in baking. It tastes very similar to brown sugar but is made from coconut palm sap. Here is the coconut sugar I use. You can always substitute the coconut sugar for brown sugar if you like!

Baking soda: The baking soda helps the bread rise a bit while it is baking.

Chocolate chips: We can’t forget about the chocolate chips! They just help make each bite more chocolatey and rich. Once you make the batter, you will simply fold in the chocolate chips before transferring the batter to your bread pan.

A few tips for making this gluten-free chocolate avocado bread

  • When you combine the liquid ingredients and the dry ingredients together, the batter will be thick and dense. Don’t worry! It is supposed to be and when it’s finish baking it will come out so moist, rich, and chocolatey!
  • The secret to this recipe is time! Once in the oven, the avocado chocolate bread needs time to bake. It takes about an hour for this bread to fully bake. The key here is to check the bread at about 60 minutes and insert a toothpick to see if it comes out clean. If it does not, continue to bake the bread for an additional 5 minutes at a time until the toothpick comes out clean when inserted into the center.
  • You may want to slice this delicious bread up as soon as it comes out of the oven, but it is best to allow let the bread rest for about 10 minutes in the bread pan once you remove it from the oven —trust me, this chocolate avocado bread is worth the wait!

Ingredients

Ingredients for the Avocado Mixture

  • 1 1/2 Avocados (or 1 3/4 cups)
  • 1/3 cup Applesauce
  • 1/4 cup Coconut Oil, melted
  • 2 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 2 tbsp Coconut Cream
  • 2 tbsp Maple Syrup
  • 1/4 cup Almond milk, if needed

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups Gluten-Free All Purpose Flour (Bob's Red Mill 1:1 Gluten-Free Baking Flour works best. Can also sub regular flour)
  • 1/2 cup Almond Flour
  • 1/2 cup Cocoa Powder
  • 1/4 cup Coconut Sugar
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1/2 tsp Sea Salt
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips, plus more for topping the bread

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line an 8 1/2 x 4 1/2 bread pan with parchment paper and set aside.
  • Add the ingredients for the avocado mixture to a food processor or blender. Blend until smooth.
  • In a large bowl, combine all of the dry ingredients (except the chocolate chips). Using a rubber spatula, combine the dry ingredients and the wet ingredients. If the mixture appears too dry, slowly incorporate up to 1/4 cup of almond milk until all the ingredients are fully combined. Keep in mind that the mixture will be very thick.
  • Transfer the batter into the parchment-lined bread pan. Using a spatula, make sure it is evenly spread in the bread pan.
  • Bake for about 60 minutes. Take a toothpick and insert it into the center of the bread. If it comes out clean, the bread is done baking. If it does not, bake for an additional 5 minutes at a time or until the toothpick comes out clean. (Should be no more than an additional 15 minutes if necessary)
  • Remove the bread pan from the oven and place it on a wire rack. Let the bread cool in the bread pan for about 10 minutes before removing from the pan and serving.

Notes

  • When you combine the liquid ingredients and the dry ingredients together, the batter will be thick and dense. Don’t worry! It is supposed to be and when it’s finish baking it will come out so moist, rich, and chocolatey!

Yes!!! This bread was MOIST as heck! The next time I make this, I need to make two loaves because my family made it do a disappearing act. My fiance is a huge chocolate fan and he loved every bite of this.

I’ve seen avocado popping up in a lot of uncommon places so I finally decided to test out one of the recipes I’ve been seeing! Yours was so good and I think the avocado definitely added to the overall texture (in a GOOD way)! So good!

I actually hate avocados but my Mom loves them so I tried for her. Surprisingly, I ended up loving it also as the avocado gives it great moist and rich texture, but you don’t actually get the flavor of the avocado which was perfect for me.
