Making your own electrolyte drink at home is easier than you think and you probably already have all the ingredients! Once you see and feel the benefits of making your own hydrating electrolyte drink, you’ll never look at those premade sports drinks the same.
Whether it’s after an intense workout, a hot, sweaty day, a night of drinking, or when plain water just doesn’t cut it, this DIY electrolyte drink is packed with essential minerals to deeply replenish and restore your body’s electrolyte balance.
What is an electrolyte drink?
An electrolyte drink, whether store-bought or homemade, is packed with important minerals like sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. These minerals help your body stay hydrated, keep a healthy pH balance, support your muscles and nerves to work properly, boost energy levels, improve focus and mental clarity, and help prevent muscle cramps and fatigue.
Ingredients You Need To Make Your Own DIY Electrolyte Drink
- 1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice: Orange juice is rich in vitamin C and potassium, which helps support the immune system and replenishes electrolytes lost through sweat, aiding hydration.
- 1/4 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice: Lemon juice provides vitamin C and citric acid, which enhance mineral absorption and help maintain the body’s electrolyte balance.
- 1/4 cup fresh squeezed lime juice: Lime juice is packed with antioxidants and potassium, promoting fluid retention and preventing dehydration.
- 1/4 teaspoon mineral salt: Mineral salt contains sodium, magnesium, and trace minerals, which restore electrolytes and enhance water retention for proper hydration.
- 1-2 tablespoons raw honey or manuka honey: Honey provides natural sugars for energy and aids water absorption in the intestines, improving hydration.
- 2 cups water: Water serves as the base, directly hydrating the body by replenishing fluid levels.
- 1 cup coconut water (optional): Coconut water is naturally high in potassium, magnesium, and sodium, making it an excellent natural electrolyte that enhances hydration and balances fluids.
What’s wrong with regular sports drinks?
Regular sports drinks (think Gatorade or Powerade) contain a very high amount of (artificial) sugar, an excessive amount of sodium, and often contain (carcinogenic)artificial dyes like red #40 and yellow #5!
How To Make Your Drink
The easiest way to make your own electrolyte drink is to add all the ingredients to a blender, and blend until combined. You can also add all the ingredients to a large mason jar and give it a good shake. It’s super easy and only takes 5 minutes to make!

When to drink an electrolyte drink?
- During or after an illness: Illnesses involving fever, vomiting, or diarrhea can lead to significant electrolyte loss, making replenishment essential for proper cell function and recovery.
- After an intense workout: Exercise depletes electrolytes through sweat, and replenishing them helps restore muscle function and hydration levels, preventing fatigue and cramping.
- On a hot day when you’ve been sweating a lot: Heat causes increased perspiration, leading to a loss of vital minerals like sodium and potassium, which are necessary to maintain fluid balance and prevent dehydration.
- When you’re feeling dehydrated or low on energy: Electrolytes like magnesium and potassium help regulate your body’s water levels and support energy production for improved vitality.
- After a night of drinking: Alcohol is a diuretic, causing the body to lose fluids and electrolytes, which can be restored to combat dehydration and alleviate hangover symptoms.
How to store your drink?
The best way to store a homemade electrolyte drink is to pour it into an airtight glass container. I like to store mine in a large mason jar. Store the drink in the fridge to maintain its freshness, prevents contamination, and preserves the potency of the nutrients. Homemade electrolyte drinks typically stay fresh for 3-5 days in the fridge. Shake well before drinking to ensure the ingredients are evenly mixed.
Important note: As always, you should always consult your doctor if you have questions regarding restoring electrolytes, especially if you have a medical issue.
Recipe Variations. Here are a few unique ways to enhance your electrolyte drink further
- Chlorophyll Ice Cubes: I like to made chlorophyll ice cubes to add to my drink. To make them, I add 2-3 drops of liquid chlorophyll to about 10 ounces of water and transfer it to an ice cube tray to freeze.
- Drinking liquid chlorophyll may support detoxification, improve energy levels, reduce body odor, and promote skin health due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and oxygen-enhancing properties.
- Fresh Ginger: Add 1″ (inch) piece of fresh ginger when blending. Fresh ginger indirectly supports hydration by enhancing digestion, reducing inflammation, and soothing the stomach, which can improve water absorption and help maintain fluid balance in the body.
- Agave Syrup: For a vegan option, instead of honey, use agave syrup or monkfruit sugar. The natural sugars can improve water absorption in the intestines, supporting the body’s energy levels and replenishment during hydration.
- Baking Soda: add 1/8 teaspoon of baking soda to your electrolye mix. The baking soda helps by acting as a source of sodium, an essential electrolyte that helps regulate fluid balance, while its alkalizing properties can assist in maintaining a stable pH level in the body.
