This creamy soursop smoothie is made with fresh guanabana, sweet ataulfo mangos, coconut cream, and a splash of agave! Soursop strengthens your immune system, reduces inflammation, and is packed with antioxidants to protect your body from harmful free radicals. In this recipe, I use fresh soursop and show you how to prepare it, but feel free to swap it for frozen soursop—it’s just as delicious!
If you can get your hands on fresh soursop, aka guanabana or graviola, consider yourself lucky! This tropical gem thrives in regions like the Caribbean, Central and South America, and parts of Southeast Asia, but it’s quite rare elsewhere. You may spot it in grocery stores, often packaged or frozen into a puree. I was lucky enough to find some at a local fruteria in Tulum, Mexico. After visiting four other fruterias, I finally found it! It took about a week to ripen and I knew the first thing I would do is make a smoothie!
Soursop has a unique taste, often described as a blend of pineapple, strawberry, and citrus with creamy, custard-like notes. It is packed with vitamin C, which enhances immune function, and its high fiber content supports digestive health by promoting regular bowel movements. Additionally, soursop contains potent antioxidants such as acetogenins, which have been studied for their potential anti-cancer properties and ability to combat oxidative stress.
Drinking soursop in smoothies, shakes, or juices is a fantastic way to enjoy its numerous health benefits! Soursop is pretty easy to prepare. It takes a little bit of time, but it is totally worth it!
Ingredients
- Soursop: You can use fresh or frozen soursop. I use the flesh from a one-pound soursop, which gave me a little over a cup of soursop flesh. If using frozen, one and a half cups of frozen soursop. (Of course, you can add more or less if desired)
- Mangos: I like to use ataulfo mangos because they are generally smaller and sweeter than regular mangos. The fresh mangos are added to the smoothie, for their sweet, juicy taste and adding frozen mango to helps achieve a thick, colder smoothie consistency, making it extra refreshing on those hot days. Alternatively, you can use fresh mango only and ice to reach the desired smoothie consistency.
- Coconut Milk: Full-fat coconut milk enhances the tropical taste of the smoothie and makes it extra creamy. Use canned coconut milk for the best flavor.
- Agave Syrup: The smoothie does not need sweetener, but it tastes even better with the addition of agave! Honey would work great as well. A tablespoon or two is all you need.
Other fruits that pair well with soursop
- Banana
- Papaya
- Pineapple
- Strawberry
- Guava
- Cherimoya
Soursop pairs well with any tropical fruit. Instead of mango, you can make it with your favorite fruit. Or make it using only soursop and add fresh lime juice and ice.
How Do You Know When Soursop (Guanabana) Is Ripe?
You’ll know soursop is ripe when it feels slightly soft to the touch and has a fragrant aroma. The skin should give a little when you press it gently, similar to an avocado. If it’s still firm, give it a few more days to ripen. When soursop is ripe you the skin is soft enough to break open with your hands.
How To Prepare Fresh Soursop
Step 1: Begin by rinsing the fruit to remove any dirt or residue. Then cut the soursop in half lengthwise. Use a spoon to scoop out the flesh from the skin, discarding any seeds.
Step 2: Use a spoon to scoop out the flesh from the skin, discarding any seeds. Depending on your recipe, you can mash the flesh, blend it into a smoothie, or juice it.
To make the smoothie, add everything to the blender and blend until smooth! Enjoy it right away or store it in an airtight mason jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours. This fresh soursop smoothie is one of my favorite summertime drinks and instantly transports me to a tropical island! I hope you enjoy the recipe! xo
