Crispy Gluten-Free Breaded Air Fryer Fish

If you’re wondering if you can make breaded fish in an air fryer, the answer is a resounding yes! The coating mix is easy to make and gives the fish such great flavor!

Ingredients needed to make gluten free breaded air fryer fish: fish, cooking oil, seasonings, and gluten free bread crumbs

Here Is What You Will Need To Make This Crispy Gluten-Free Air Fryer Fish

Fish Fillets: You can use whatever whitefish is your favorite. I like to use rockfish, but cod, tilapia, catfish, haddock, and pollock also work well in this recipe!

Avocado Oil: The fish will be coated in cooking oil to help the breading mixture adhere to the fish. Use avocado oil or your favorite cooking oil.

Air Fryer Fish Coating Mix

  • Dried breadcrumbs: Use gluten-free breadcrumbs, if necessary. Use panko breadcrumbs for added texture. I use Schar Gluten-Free Bread Crumbs. Almond flour also works well for a gluten-free, low-carb option.
  • Seasoning: Seasoning the breading mixture is important and gives the fish so much flavor. You’ll need paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, sea salt, and black pepper.
  • Optional Add-in: Freshly Grated Parmesan Cheese. Add red crushed pepper and cayenne pepper for a bit of heat or add cajun seasoning or old bay seasoning for added flavor.

For Extra Crispy Fish (similar to fried fish):

  • 1 Large Egg, beaten: Coat the fish on both sides with egg before coating with the breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup Flour: Add Flour (Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour or Regular All-Purpose Flour) to the breadcrumb mixture. (optional)

How To Air Fry Fish

  1. Start by using fresh fish or frozen fish that has been completely thawed. Pat your fish dry with a cloth or paper towel. Then season both sides of the fish with salt and pepper, to your liking.
  2. Coat the fish fillets in oil. I like to use avocado oil. You can also use canola oil, vegetable oil, or olive oil.
  3. Prepare your breading mixture in large bowl or plate. Mix in any optional add-ins like parmesan cheese, cajun seasoning, or red crushed peppers.
  4. Coat each fish fillet on both side in the breading mixture.
  5. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F for 5 minutes. Then add the fish fillets in a single layer to the air fryer and cook for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through. If you’d like to get a particular side more crispy, cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
  6. Serve with your favorite sides and enjoy!

Tips

  1. Fresh or frozen fish works well for this recipe. If you are using frozen fish, make sure, make sure it is completely thawed before cooking.
  2. Use tongs when working with the fish fillets to reduce any mess, especially when flipping the fish in the air fryer.
  3. Line the air fryer basket with parchment paper for easy clean-up.
  4. Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket. Overcrowding prevents the fish from becoming crispy.
  5. You may have to adjust the cooking time dependng on the type and thickness of the fish you are cooking. Generally, fish is done cooking when it is flakey and easily falls apart with a fork.

How To Reheat Fish In The Air Fryer

  1. Spray the air fryer basket with cooking oil and preheat the air fryer at 360°F for 5 minutes.
  2. Place the fish in the air fryer in a single layer and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side at 360°F.
  3. Enjoy!
