What is Nutella?

Nutella is a creamy chocolate and hazelnut spread. It’s made with cocoa, roasted hazelnuts, milk, sugar, palm oil, lecithin, and vanillin (the main component of vanilla bean extract).

The Best Way to Use Nutella

This dessert spread is so versatile, that it can be used in a variety of ways. Use it as a dipping sauce, a spread for cakes, a filling in pastries, and more. But our favorite way to use it is for this Nutella cookie recipe.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Nutella: This is essential for that mouthwatering, melty chocolate hazelnut center.
  • Melted butter: This gives the cookies crisp edges and a soft center.
  • Egg: This binds the other ingredients and enriches the cookie dough.
  • Brown sugar: It is best to use brown sugar as it has more moisture than white sugar and adds a subtle, sweet, molasses flavor.
  • Gluten-free flour: Use gluten-free all-purpose flour for gluten-free Nutella cookies. If you are not sensitive to gluten, feel free to use regular all-purpose flour.
  • Salt: This enhances the overall flavor profile by balancing the sweetness and intensifying the taste of the chocolate.
  • Baking soda: This leavening agent helps the cookies rise and become fluffy.
  • Vanilla extract: This enhances the taste of the Nutella.
  • Semisweet chocolate bar or Chopped Hazelnuts: This is an optional ingredient. Chop very finely before adding them to the dough.

How to Make Nutella Cookies

FREEZE THE NUTELLA: Scoop a small amount (about 1 teaspoon each) of Nutella onto a parchment-lined tray. Freeze the scoops of Nutella for at least 30 minutes until firm.

MIX. Mix sugar, egg, and vanilla extract in a large bowl until smooth and well blended. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Then gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

OPTIONAL STEP. For extra texture, fold in chopped nuts, chocolate chips, or hazelnuts into the cookie dough.

SCOOP. Scoop a tablespoon of cookie dough and flatten it with your palm. Place a frozen Nutella ball in the center and wrap the dough around it, forming a ball. Arrange the Nutella-stuffed cookie dough balls on the prepared baking sheets, leaving space between each. FLATTEN COOKIES (OPTIONAL). Flatten the cookies slightly with the back of a spoon or fork for a classic cookie shape.

BAKE. Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are set. The centers may still be soft but will firm up as they cool. Allow the Nutella-stuffed cookies to cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

SERVE. Bite into the warm, gooey center of Nutella goodness in these delightful stuffed cookies!

Tips To Nail the Recipe

  • Do not skip the chilling step for the Nutella. If you do, the chocolate will ooze out of the cookies and make a mess.
  • Ensure the dough completely covers the Nutella to prevent it from leaking out. This will help maintain the structural integrity of the cookie and keep the filling intact.
  • Keep the cookie size consistent to ensure even baking. This helps manage the Nutella-to-cookie ratio for a well-balanced flavor in each bite.
  • Avoid overbaking to maintain a soft and chewy texture.
  • Let the cookies set on a cooling rack after baking. They are very soft when you take them out of the oven and may fall apart if not allowed to cool.

Substitutions + Variations

  • Mix-Ins: After mixing the cookie dough fold in chopped nuts, chocolate chips, or hazelnuts into the cookie dough.
  • Toppings: Want to make Nutella stuffed cookies even more irresistible? Drizzle freshly baked cookies with chocolate sauce or sprinkle them with a dash of flaky sea salt.

Storage

Store Nutella cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, if they last that long. Pop them in the microwave in 10-second increments to warm them up.

FAQs

What can I do with extra Nutella?

When it comes to Nutella, the possibilities are endless! Add a tablespoon to a smoothie, use it as a dip on a charcuterie board, or spread it on some toast.

Can I freeze Nutella cookies?

Absolutely! You can freeze cookies just before baking or freeze the baked cookies. Store them in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months.

You can bake them from frozen. Just let them sit on the counter as the oven preheats and add 1 extra minute to the baking time. And if they’re already baked, just set them on the kitchen counter to thaw out.
