Bone Broth Hot Chocolate is a rewarding way to enhance your typical cup of hot cocoa with gut enhancing nutrients and a boost of collagen! Drink it on a warm day when you’re craving a cozy drink with benefits. I make this with my homemade bone broth and top with yummy gut healthy marshmallows.
✨What You’ll Need To Make This Gut Healthy Hot Chocolate: (Makes 2 10oz glasses)
- ✨2 tbsp Raw Cacao Powder: Packed with flavonoids, raw cacao fights inflammation, supports healthy gut bacteria, and provides a mood-enhancing boost. Raw cacao powder offers more benefits than processed cocoa powder.
- ✨1 cup Bone Broth: Rich in gelatin, glycine, and proline, bone broth can help strengthen the gut lining and reduce inflammation. You can use chicken bone broth or beef bone broth. I like to use my homemade beef bone broth and find that you can’t taste it in the hot chocolate.
- ✨1 scoop Collagen Powder: Provides additional amino acids that promote the integrity of the gut lining and support tissue repair. (use one scoop or one small packet)
- ✨¼ teaspoon Cinnamon: Can help balance gut bacteria due to its antimicrobial properties, stopping the growth of harmful bacteria
- ✨A pinch of High-Quality Salt: I like to use Celtic Sea Salt because of its rich mineral content, including magnesium, potassium, calcium, and trace elements, which help support proper hydration, electrolyte balance, and overall bodily function.
- ✨Milk of Choice: I like to use my own homemade Hemp Milk or Almond Milk. Use whatever milk you prefer
- ✨Maple Syrup: Add up to 3 tablespoons to sweeten your hot chocolate or sweeten to your desired taste.
- ✨Vanilla Extract: You’ll only need just a splash
How does this bone broth hot chocolate improve gut health?
Bone broth hot chocolate improves gut health by combining ingredients that support digestion and strengthen the gut lining:
- Bone Broth: Rich in collagen, gelatin, and amino acids like glutamine, it helps repair and maintain the gut lining, improving intestinal integrity and reducing inflammation. Bone broth is higher in collagen and protein than regular broth.
- Raw Cacao Powder: Packed with polyphenols and antioxidants, it fosters the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, contributing to a balanced microbiome.
- Collagen Powder: Provides additional support for the gut lining and promotes tissue repair, complementing the benefits of bone broth.
Together, these ingredients nourish the gut, support digestion, and create a soothing, nutrient-dense drink ideal for maintaining a healthy gastrointestinal system.
Why is gut health important
- The Gut-Immune Connection: Approximately 70% of the immune system resides in the gut, where specialized cells and gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) help detect and fight pathogens. A healthy gut ensures this system functions optimally.
- Nutrient Absorption: A healthy gut efficiently absorbs essential nutrients like vitamin C, zinc, and iron, which are critical for immune function. Poor gut health may hinder nutrient absorption, weakening your ability to fight off illness.
- Pathogen Defense: The gut acts as a physical barrier, preventing harmful bacteria and viruses from entering the bloodstream. Strengthening this barrier through a healthy gut helps lower the risk of infection during cold and flu season.
Together, these ingredients nourish the gut, support digestion, and create a soothing, nutrient-dense drink ideal for maintaining a healthy gastrointestinal system.
The flavors of the bone broth are masked by the cacao and maple syrup. I find by adding a bit more maple syrup or milk, it covers the taste of the bone broth.
Yes, you can blend the ingredients together first, then warm it up on the stovetop.
Yes, for sure! Store any leftover bone broth hot cocoa in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Warm on the stovetop when ready to enjoy.
I recommend drinking bone broth hot chocolate early in the day to get a boost of nutrients and warm up the digestive system. You can have it anytime throughout the day, especially after coming inside from a cold winter day.
